Bruno Lage’s tenure as SL Benfica manager has tonight came to an end. The Lisbon side lost 2-0 in Madeira to Marítimo, the final nail in the coffin. Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira (LFV) claimed in the post-match press conference that Lage had offered his resignation, feeling that people no longer wanted him in charge. Several sources are reporting that the decision has been finalised but no official comment has been made by SL Benfica as of yet.

Benfica’s form has been abysmal of late, just one win in five in a run that has saw Benfica defeated by Santa Clara and Marítimo, as well as draws with Portimonense and Tondela.
Lage first took charge halfway through last season, bringing a much needed freshness and vigour to a stale Benfica side. His implementation of youth, namely one João Félix, allowed his Benfica side to rally and fight for the title, a title that was eventually won against the odds by As Águias.
